Si, vis amari, ama
When in December of 2011 the JITRO Czech Girls Choir visited Germany and France on its Christmas tour, it wasn’t just about waiting for concerts, cheering audiences, and impressions of new places. Of an outstanding importance were also the everyday choir rehearsals, namely of a new work composed by Jan Jrásek and titled as Si, vis amari, ama (If you would be loved, love). The other Latin sayings appear in the titles of “Love overcomes everything,” “What feeds me, also destroys me” and “Luck wishes to the courageous” while the composer leaves listeners the opportunity to have handpicked these empirical truths in their own story. However, the final part is about confronting the judgments of antiquity, renaissance and the 20th century: “In the fourth part, I put three quotations in contraposition. The first one is by Seneca – Si, vis amari, ama (which I used for the title of the whole cycle), which relates to the love in general. The quotation by Ignatius of Loyola (Ad Maior gloriam Dei) includes an element of political power. Thus the main point of significance becomes the quotation by GB Shaw (Beware of the man whose God is in the skies), which indicates unambiguously that God is and should be felt in the heart of every human being.”
