Flutist Sato Moughalian enjoys a widely varied career as chamber musician, soloist, and orchestral player in New York City. She has performed concerts on five continents, including festival appearances at the Diaghilev Festival (Perm, Russia), Moussem Culturel d’Asilah (Morocco), Festival de Prades (France); and the Angel Fire, Skaneateles, Next Wave, Lincoln Center, Cape May, Bar Harbor, Music from Salem, Mohawk Trails and Bard Festivals, and has presented masterclasses in Tblisi, Georgia; Kharkiv, Ukraine; Beijing, China; Cali, Colombia; Sweden; and all across North America. As acting flutist of the Imani Winds during the 2013-14 season, she performed chamber music at the Hollywood Bowl with the Wayne Shorter Quartet. In New York City, she is the principal flutist of the Gotham Chamber Opera, Opéra Français de New York, Colonial Symphony, and has appeared as guest flutist with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Richardson Chamber Players, and New York Chamber Ensemble. She frequently performs and records music of living composers as the principal flutist of the American Modern Ensemble and Perspectives Ensemble, and guest with groups including New York Composers Circle, Alarm Will Sound, and as the flutist of Quintet of the Americas for twelve years. Recent concerto performances include Mozart D Major Concerto with the Windham Festival Orchestra; C.P.E. Bach Concerto in G with the Orchestra of the Red Door; Bach Brandenburg Concerti with Ensemble Tremblay.
An active freelance performer in the New York area, she has served as guest principal flute with American Ballet Theatre, American Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Virtuosi, Westfield Symphony; and Orquestra Sinfonico do Estado São Paulo, Brazil with whom she recorded the Bachianas Brasileiras No. 6 and numerous symphonic works of Heitor Villa-Lobos for the BIS label. Ms. Moughalian is Artistic Director of Perspectives Ensemble, which she founded in 1993 at Columbia University; the ensemble has been presented at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center Great Performers, the Guggenheim and Rubin Museums, Morgan Library, the 92nd Street Y, and Miller Theatre, and is Artist-in-Residence at the City University of New York Graduate Center and was a resident ensemble for Miller Theatre’s ‘Pocket Concerto Project.’
Ms. Moughalian’s featured recordings include a critically acclaimed disc of music by Xavier Montsalvatge for Naxos (Opera News: “Flutist Sato Moughalian plays brilliantly”); music of Richard Danielpour for Sony Classics; music of Charles Tomlinson Griffes for Newport Classics, the Osvaldo Lacerda Piccolo Concerto for Keuka; music of Jeff Scott for Urban Classical Music; multiple recordings of music by Robert Paterson for American Modern Recordings; music of Karel Husa for New World Records; music of Neil Rolnick for Innova; music of J.S. Bach for Perspectives Recordings and Lumiere, music of Giulio Briccialdi for MHS. On April 24, 2015, she released a disc called Oror/Lullaby, Armenian music by Komitas, Sayat-Nova, Ara Dinkjian, Kanachyan, and Grikor Mirzaian Suni, arranged for flute and harp.
In 2013, she was awarded the Catalan Government’s Ramon Llull Prize for Creative Arts.
