ZHEN CHEN
Hailed as “brilliant” by Fanfare Magazine, multi-award winning pianist Zhen Chen has performed as a soloist and chamber music artist at prominent music venues in USA and China, such as Stern Auditorium, Weill Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall, David Geffen Hall of Lincoln Center, Preston Bradley Hall of the Chicago Cultural Center, and China National Centre for Performing Arts. His performances have been featured on live radio broadcast on Chicago WFMT 98.7.
Zhen founded the Jade Duo, a high-caliber partnership with acclaimed violinist Shuai Shi, a top-prize winner of Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition and Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition. Their debut recording FAURÉ, SCHUMANN, BARTÓK Sonatas for Violin and Piano has received plaudits from listeners and critics of Fanfare, American Record Guide, Audiophile Audition and ClassicalNet. Fanfare described the duo’s performance as “inexpressibly beautiful” and a “perfect balance” with “sheer beauty of tone, fluent and fluid playing, and emotional refinement.” Zhen and his partner Shuai Shi have been honored with Silver Medals in 2016 Global Music Award for outstanding achievement duo and album.
Although classically-trained, Zhen has been able to work with leading music artists, such as Jeffery Milarsky and Edward Smaldone, to perform and promote contemporary music. He also collaborates extensively with top-notch Chinese folk music artists to contribute to the lively and diverse ethnic music scene in New York City.
In a cross-culture and cross-genre endeavor, Zhen wears another hat as a composer to create new music that mixes Eastern and Western sensibilities. Zhen’s music explores new possibilities by embroidering traditional Chinese music instruments and folk tone with piano and Western style chamber musiccollaboration. He takes a minimalistic, modern approach in composition with emphasises on story-telling and emotional appeal defined by seamless melodic lines and exquisite tonality.
