Comme Bon Lui Semble
Sophie Dupuis composer
Composer Sophie Dupuis presents dazzling, profoundly eclectic compositions inspired by visual art on COMME BON LUI SEMBLE. Dupuis’ musical language is measured, almost minimalist, but the colors she weaves into bright tapestries of sound certainly aren’t. Pop culture or high culture, she draws inspiration from numerous sources — leading to compositions that are at once highly abstract, yet highly descriptive. It’s a tightrope to walk, and at dizzying heights, but thankfully, Dupuis is not susceptible to musical vertigo.

Sophie Dupuis
Sophie Dupuis (b.1988) is a francophone composer from New Brunswick, Canada, interested in acoustic, electroacoustic, vocal, and interdisciplinary art music. She finds her inspiration in the picturesque scenery of the Maritimes where she grew up, as well as in various performance and visual art forms. Her work has been commissioned and performed by soloists and groups including Duo Holz, Made in Trio, Din of Shadows, Ballet-Opéra-Pantomime, Thin Edge New Music Collective, ECM+, the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy, Quasar saxophone quartet, and Esprit Orchestra.
Brno Contemporary Orchestra
The Brno Contemporary Orchestra (BCO) was founded in 2011 with the aim of performing the world’s contemporary music and selected 20th-century works in Czechia and Czech music throughout the world. The ensemble includes top-level professional musicians employed in the leading Czech orchestras. It draws on a large pool of permanent collaborators who perform in various lineups according to the needs of each project.
Pavel Šnajdr
Pavel Šnajdr is a Czech conductor and composer. He is a graduate of the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts (JAMU), Brno in composition (which he studied with Alois Piňos) and conducting (with Emil Skoták). Beyond working with symphony orchestras, he has been engaged by music theatres including the J.K. Tyl Theatre in Pilsen, the Prague State Opera and the Moravian Theatre in Olomouc, and currently conducts opera at the National Theatre in Brno.
Amahl Arulanandam
With tastes ranging from baroque music to death metal, Toronto-based cellist Amahl Arulanandam is known for his musical versatility and ability to adapt to many different genres. Feeling at home in studios, small clubs and large concert halls, Arulanandam hopes to convey that musical expression is beyond genres and labels.
Aysel Taghi-Zada
Aysel Taghi-Zada is a passionate violinist/violist devoted to the performance of classical and contemporary music. She has collaborated with some of the most distinguished composers and musicians from North America and Europe such as Philip Glass, Brian Current, Salvatore Sciarrino, Chris Paul Harman, Kevin Lau, Mark Fewer, Pierre Leroux, David Geringas, Gidon Kramer and Pascale Beaudin. She is frequently invited to perform with contemporary ensembles such as Tapestry Opera, New Music Concerts, Freesound Ensemble, Thin Edge New Music Collective, Soundstreams Canada, and Continuum Contemporary Music. As a recording artist, she can be heard on Jason Doell’s 2018 album … Amid the Cannon’s Roar, Catherine Daniel’s Sacred Christmas, and The Marrieds’ Fire in the Flame.
Michael Murphy
Hailed as “excellent” (New York Times, 2022) and “captivating” (Myanmar Times, 2018), Chinese-Canadian percussionist Michael Murphy has toured North America, Scandinavia, Europe, and Asia as a chamber and solo musician. Though having performed in groups such as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonisches Orchester Freiburg, his focus is in contemporary music and performance of new works. In Canada, this involves him in groups such as New Music Concerts, Array Music, Soundstreams, and the Esprit Orchestra, and with festivals such as Nuit Blanche, the New Creations Festival, 21C Festival at Koerner, and the Luminato Festival. Internationally, this has brought him on multiple occasions to the 2D2D Festival in the Ukraine and the Darmstadt Ferienkurse für neue Musik in Germany, among others.
Laurence Schaufele
Laurence Schaufele is a young professional musician intent on exploring the possibilities of the viola in a wide variety of genres. His experience spans diverse styles of music such as classical, jazz, klezmer, celtic, bluegrass, and many more.
Hailing from rural southern Alberta, Laurence trained in the European classical tradition. Laurence grew up in a musical family and went through the normal stringed instrument pre-college regimen just like his siblings. Starting his post-secondary in Calgary, he transferred to Toronto for a change of pace. After graduating from the Royal Conservatory of Music in 2015 in viola performance, Laurence set off on a career which stretched the viola between many genres.
Matthias McIntire
Matthias McIntire is a composer, performer, and educator active across a broad spectrum of contexts. Newly appointed Composer-in-Residence at the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance (LAMP), his compositions reflect an eclectic background in performance (violin, viola, voice, and electronics), Western classical and new music, as well as jazz, fiddle, free improvisation, field recording, foley art, and electronic music.
Wesley Shen
Wesley Shen is a Toronto-based keyboardist, specializing in contemporary music on piano and harpsichord. He plays regularly with many Toronto ensembles including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Esprit Orchestra, Soundstreams, New Music Concerts, and Continuum Contemporary Music. He also is a core member of Freesound Collective. He has received generous funding from the Canada Council of the Arts in order to commission a number of new works for harpsichord and piano. An ongoing goal of his is to help expand the harpsichord as a contemporary music medium.
Notes
COMME BON LUI SEMBLE holds a collection of pieces that were inspired by works of visual art, pictures, and images. If, like me, you spend most of your time in your own head, images can take on a life of their own, transform, develop, and communicate. The emotions, the narrative, the textures: these can all be translated into any art form, the main difference in musical language being time. This remains for me a challenge that keeps me hooked to the art of composing.
The title of the album, which translates to “as she pleases,” is perhaps a reflection of my slight rebel nature. Besides, you have to be a bit rebellious to be an artist and to counter societal ideals. From the outside, I’m likely the most inconspicuous rebel of all, though I must admit that there’s something quite satisfying in following your own instincts in spite of others’ opinions, however well intended they may be. Sure, it’s sometimes discouraging being on this path when catching a glimpse of others’ grass, but I’ll be content that mine is full of dandelions that are sure to be as yellow as the sun can be.
FR
