Estonian composer Toivo Tulev is a visionary voice in contemporary classical music, known for his multi-layered and intricate compositions that balance complexity with emotional depth. Tulev’s works are marked by rich polyphony, innovative harmonic language, and new means of expression on instruments that transcend geographical boundaries. His music invites listeners into contemplative soundscapes, where the distinctions between the familiar and the unfamiliar, as well as the temporal and the eternal, beautifully blur and dissolve.

He once wrote to me, “In many ways, music is communication itself, not just a means for it.” When phenomena, no matter how simple, are described too simply, they slip away from our grasp. Perhaps this is why his works exhibit exquisite craftsmanship that emphasises details. The driving forces in his music are often meticulously structured with mathematical precision. He is interested in dynamic symmetry, reduction processes, and the hidden occurrence of deeper structures.

What makes Tulev’s music so unforgettable is that each piece has its own distinct identity. This singularity is important to his teaching as well—it’s not just about crafting technically impressive work, but about creating something you cannot confuse with anything else. Black Mirror, featured on this album, encapsulates this perfectly. The beginning line of this piece, “Back to zero,” carries a powerful message, and I, along with many others who have heard it, can replay it in my mind like a perfect recording; it is so undeniably clear and unmistakable.

As both a student and a friend, I’ve seen firsthand how Tulev’s works confront deeply personal ideas. His music feels like more than artistic expression; it becomes a vehicle for existential dialogue.
