Dušan Bavdek (b. Slovenia, 1971) is a composer and professor of composition and music theory as well as a vice dean for international affairs at the University of Ljubljana Academy of Music.
His compositional opus encompasses pieces for symphony orchestra, string orchestra, wind orchestra, opera, ensembles, chamber groups, and soloistic performance. They have been presented as a part of subscription series of Slovenian orchestras, choirs, and music theaters, as well as concerts in Europe, America, Asia, and Australia, such as Leading European Composers of the Washington Phillips Collection, ISCM World Music Days (Hong Kong, Sydney, Ljubljana), UNESCO International Composers’ Tribune (Paris), Six Continents Project (Amsterdam), Ode to Europe of the Warsaw Chamber Opera, at the 100 Years of the ÖKB Festival (Vienna), and more. Bavdek’s music was described among others as “witty, original and persuasive” (Radio Slovenia), “organically fluent” (Ljubljana Daily), and “incredibly clever and pleasant, wittily twisted” (Ljubljana Daily).
Bavdek has led many compositional workshops, lectured at various universities, and has been a jury member of competitions in composition in Europe, America, and Asia. He was a Board Member of the European Composers Forum (ECF) and the European Composers and Songwriters Alliance (ECSA). He is a member of the Working Group for the European Contemporary Composers’ Orchestra (ECCO) and the Artistic Leader of International Activities of the Society of Slovene Composers. Bavdek is a recipient of the Hungarian Knight’s Cross of Merit.
