Catherine Neville (b. 1974) is a composer of concert music for instrumental ensembles and choir. An alumna of Interlochen Arts Academy, her experiences as a clarinetist and music theorist led to studying composition with Jeff Nichols. She holds degrees in composition from the Aaron Copland School of Music in Queens, NY, in Music Education from Hofstra University, and in Performance (clarinet) from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Performed and commissioned by ensembles and solo artists alike, Neville specializes in creating works that blend aspects of tonality and serial techniques, resulting in a unique and highly expressive musical language. Her music is heard in venues across the northeast United States and internationally, with premieres in New York’s Carnegie Hall and London’s Pissarro Gallery, as well as Washington DC, Seattle, Paris, and Perugia, Italy.
Neville’s debut album, Hold Your Center, was released in May of 2022, exploring themes of self-discovery. Her commissions include Three Pieces on Paintings by Kandinsky for electric guitar and vibraphone (Ictus Novus), A Year Later for solo harp (Joseph Rebman, harpist), and Once, In Early Spring, for flute, horn, and piano (the Heavy Metal trio). Additionally, Neville’s music has been spotlighted in The Cello Museum and the Flute Examiner. Neville was a featured composer on the Muse’s Voice concert series at Barnard College in Manhattan, 2019.
Originally from the small town of Enumclaw WA, Neville is an instructor of music theory on Long Island NY.
